Welcome the Plague Year is a bit of a polarizing effort. On one hand, it is epic screamo, which by definition is a great genre known for its intense build ups, emotional breakdowns, and fantastic interludes which emanate such an intense mood throughout. On the other hand however, WtPY is pretty much standard fare for the genre. Instead of offering electronic interludes and soudscapes like Circle Takes the Square, or beautiful violin passages such as I Would Set Myself on Fire for You, they stick to basic post-rock guitar lines, reminscent of Mogwai or Godspeed You! Black Emperor. And while the album is all around solid and in no way really bad, it doesn't do much to distinguish itself from its contemporaries and push the boundries of modern screamo.
