Review Summary: The soundtrack to the average American's over the top violent daydream
You know when you’re in class and, out of boredom, you daydream about dumb violent bullshit? Well, imagine those dumb, short daydreams set to music: Sloppy, quick, and eye catching. That pretty much sums up the entire discography of
Death Wish Kids. Recording only an EP and demo throughout their run of only 2 years, the Death Wish Kids were a simple hardcore band that performed songs about growing up in bad neighborhoods, gang violence, and gambling. You know, all the
great things living in California has to offer.
The vocals these guys pulled out from the depraved trenches they found them from is the real highlight of their career. Performed by Andrea Zollo, (who, fun fact, later formed
Pretty Girls Make Graves), they hurt to listen to. She offers high pitched, coughing-up-blood shrieks that puncture their way out of the static-y, heavy guitars and penetrate your eardrums with ease. The drumming, while a little hard to hear given the rough production quality of the recordings, is also a nice little treat to listen to, adding flavor with it’s quick, snappy pacing.
The lyrics are kind of stupid, to be honest with you, though. Stuff like
”I’ll fuck your shit up” and
”Now I know why I hate this world, this world is so full of shit” just sound stupid,
to put it kindly. Then again, when it comes to the recording quality this band utilized, it’s not like you can really tell what they’re saying.
At less than 14 minutes, the Death Wish Kids’ discography serves as a fun jam for those who have a little bit of time to kill. It’s bone headed, violent, and over the top. It’s something to fuel those dumb, cartoonishly violent daydreams we all have from time to time.
