This album was released by Les Claypool in 2002 (he has released something every year from 88'). This album is incredible. Les shows us just how far the bass can be pushed. For example, there is a song that he plays a one string fretless upright bass with a drum stick. Sound crazy? You ain't heard nothin' yet.
1. Purple Onion
Not so much a song, but merley an intro (so I won't give it a rating). This song contains heavily delayed distorted bass with some volume swellings of bass in the back ground at times. Les gets a very croaky voice in this song. Its cool.
2. David Makalaster 1
There are two David M. songs on this album. The first one is the 'fake one' that claims "isn't is awfully nice, to live in a world, where everything is exactly how it seems". This song is incredibly catchy (nearly as Ding Dang) It is quite fast paced and I think that the xylophone completes it. 4.5/5
3. Buzzards Of Green Hill
Very funky/jazzy song here. Les makes good work with the flanghy-whaish effects. I don't really know the meaning of this song, but it a very catchs song again. 4/5
4. Long In The Tooth.
This song is unusual. It is very short (2:04 or something) and it has an unusual sax line with it. I do like this song, but it would need to be longer. Les gets a gets a good rhyme going with "Life is a loser, boozer, schnoozer#" Entertaining. 4/5
5. Whamola
Oh god here goes. This song is played on a one-string-fretless-upright-bass played with a drum stick. Les calls this instrument a "Whamola" There is no real guitar in this song because it is over effectified. This song is a complete jam song, totally awesome. It is intrumental (apart from a few words les does). 4.5/5
6. Ding Dang
This song is about racial prejustice. Don't be put off by the use of the word "******" in the very first lines, because this song is anti-racist. Amazingly catchy. The chorus is one of the greatest things I think I've ever heard les do. Amazingly good song with good guitar solos too! 5/5
7. Barrington Hall
This song is about Barrington hall, which was the hall of residence that Les Stayed at when at University, wildly know for its drug users/abusers who studied there. This song has violins instead of guitars, to create an effective minor key piece. Interesting. 4/5.
8. D's Diner
Not my most listen piece, but thats because it takes about 50 seconds before the actual song starts. This song is pretty cool on the whole though. It is about a diner's place called D's. It has a cool chorus as Les experiments with different voices. I tend to skip, only because of the intro though. 3.75/5
9. Light In The Sky
This piece seems short, but in reality, it isn't. It is a trippy song, and it has a cool bass line. It is mostly a quiet song.
10. Up On The Roof
This song is great. It has a really cool bass line. This song is a good length and has a rocking chorus. This is like nothing else Les has done. 5/5
11. David Makalaster II
This is the most realistic David Makalaster (would it be so nice, to live in a world, where everything's exacty how it seems...). This is about half the speed of the first, les has a more twangy voice in this one. Its way darker, but I listen to the other one more.
3.5/5
12. Cosmic Highway
The albums best track. It is 7 minutes long, and 7 minutes beautiful. It has an awesome fiddle solo. It is over all, a quiet song, but it has it moments where is goes louder and louder, and it seems to remind me of Pink Floyd. This song is amazing. 5/5
Overall, this album rocks! 5/5.
