Review Summary: The best body of work, albeit an EP, that I have heard thus far in 2016.

Movements, a California post-hardcore outfit signed to Fearless Records has put forth a six track EP entitled Outgrown Things, and it is the best piece of work across all genres thus far in 2016. What helps the EP eclipse the full-length outings that have hit airwaves and store shelves this year is that the EP plays one of the most apoplectic benefactions I have heard in recent memory.

Opening tracks 'Kept' and 'Nineteen' demonstrate all the strengths of the post hardcore genre. Imposing riffs, above average lyrics and arduous screams that feel somewhat resonant with pop punk, but as mentioned, all the strengths of post-hardcore are here in spades. 'Worst Wishes' has a slower tempo and feels a lot more melodic, and 'Hatchet' is an incursion of sorts, marking an immediate return of the up-tempo riffage and hardened drumming that the earlier tracks offered. 'Hatchet' has eerily noticeable ambience as the end of the track nears, and I feel all of these qualities make this track, as well as the rest of the EP, a very pleasurable and cohesive collection of tracks.

'Vacant Home' ends the EP in similar fashion, and the EP has a whole gives you tracks that all feel created with the same blueprint, yet are distinguishable and don't ever border with consonance. A hard feat to pull off, but Movements shows it can be done. Outgrown Things is the best piece of work, EP or long player I have come across in the calendar year thus far. I'm sure work will be released that can parallel this EP, but I'd be surprised to see any releases that are leaps and bounds ahead of this outstanding six-track consummation.

It's obvious you don't really care, but these gratuitous and ostentatious claims you make considering this pedigree and quality of this collective's piece of work would be much more palatable with a modicum of evidence or perhaps more fleshed reasoning that supports your proclamations. For what you have presented in this review is nothing more than, "I like it".

Also:

"that the EP plays one of the most apoplectic benefaction I have heard in recent memory."

what?

I like how 2 comments are in regards to my vocabulary and one of them is in regards to my username. Yeah, Snake, because my user name is totally relevant

Apoplectic - indignant

Benefaction - collection or body of work

maybe next time i'll just write 'I like this album because it's good' and leave it at that

i like how if you actually read my comment, you might've noticed 90% of it has to do with you saying that this is the best release of any type in all of 2016 with almost no evidence, or any substantial reasoning to back up such a bold claim.

-also people mention your vocabulary because your vocabulary is needlessly pointlessly flowery and your reviews (at least the last two) are bad because of the words you choose to use. but yeah, bitch about the one thing people are mentioning over and over instead of maybe trying to understand why.

-also (x2)- benefaction

lol well then..I thought the review was decent but I agree with Calc that you don't describe the actual music enough to really back up any of your claims about the album. also you repeat yourself a lot for such a short review.

"above average lyrics"

simply describing something as above average is one of the worst things ive seen on this site

This EP is pretty sweet. Played with these dudes on their tour and they were great live. I've been anticipating this album for some time, and was pretty happy with the result here. The songwriting and vocals are great, but the lyrics are a little too unrelateable for me. The whole "I hate you Dad" and "Corporate jobs don't make you happy" thing is just not for me. Also, I could do without the Hotel Books style spoken word. They used it on their demo, on here, and I'm sure they'll use it on their next album.

arduous means gritty. it can't be that big of a word, it's only 2 syllables

arduous doesnt mean gritty mate, gritty means gritty

if something is arduous it is hard or difficult, like an arduous climb up a mountain

arduous screams doesnt make a whole lot of sense

The vocals are played out. Don't like it. Giving this a 5 is a huge stretch.

Try to approach the reviewing process with a little more objectivity. Obviously you love this album, which is great, but it's gonna be hard to defend a 5 rating on this. At the very least back up your praise with specifics. What do you like about the instrumentation, songwriting, and vocals?

OK dude you gotta learn something, when you write something, and it's basically just:

I'm clever
I'm clever
I'm clever
I'm clever
I'm clever

Nobody wants to read that shit

"Before I read further into the review it would be blasphemy to say that some obscure post hardcore EP is better than Bowie's Blackstar."

lol dude I agree that this isnt the AOTY but people have opinions and saying that no other album can beat Blackstar is a bit ridiculous
