Self Defense Family has always been excellent at making subtle, addicting post-hardcore, and as their tempos slow, their atmospherics amp up, making methodical, yet completely organic drumming and simple, lovely guitar lines seem absolutely beautiful. The underlying bass is always a needed and prominent feature, and Patrick Kindlons lyrical and vocal chops take the music to new heights. In this sense, Superior isn't really anything all that new for Self Defense Family, but when the songs are as good as "Good Idea Machine", who cares? It's yet another solid and sometimes brilliant EP from the workhorses of hardcore, and in only a few months time, they've got anticipation for a new full-length in spades.
