4.0 excellent | MetalSoliloquy | January 9th 17 | I didn't know RIVAL CHOIR under their old name MOUTH OF THE SOUTH, so this album is my first
contact with this band. And I must say that I really, really like this record. Even though the
music is not exactly anything new for the genre, it is definitely very good. The songs on "I
Believe, Help My Unbelief" are aggressive and atmospheric, combining post-hardcore with post-rock
elements. The vocals are almost all of the time desperate screams that one could even call
monotone but not necessarily in a bad way. The overall sound of the music is heavy and intense.
Much more interesting than the music are the lyrics on this album. The album with the very fitting
title "I Believe, Help My Unbelief" can be seen as a concept album about a Christian's crisis of
faith, the difficulty of seeing yourself sinning repeatedly and being a hypocrite and trying to
accept Christ's forgiveness and fully trust in his grace and mercy. As a Christian myself I can
strongly identity with these thoughts and feelings. "I Believe, Help My Unbelief" is not a light
album. I wouldn't even call it a fun album. It is heavy, it is intense, it is passionate, it is
thought provoking and touching but it is also sometimes painful to recognize your own mistakes and
problems in the lyrics. The good thing is that the album doesn't let you drown in negative
thoughts. In the end it is a hopeful album, an album that has the power to strengthen your faith
and trust in Christ. And this is exactly what Christian music should do.
