3.0 good | TheManMachine | August 31st 16 | Starts sleek and sprightly with its lush sway between techno-backed straight-up r&b and chopped-voice-collage garage thump, undoubtedly grooves in both, but never quite gets past seeming somewhat safe and subdued. As pretty and tricky and bouncy as these beats get, they don't really bear that mesmeric mind-grasp or whip out an aberration for kicks; and when vox get less prevalent they don't make for the most riveting of reinforcers, neither. Soothes more than it stirs, if you will -- albeit a considerably peppy and graceful soothe.

3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | August 8th 16 | It's been five years since Sepalcure's debut album, and over those years, despite not hearing that album, I've come to realize that I'm a sucker for downtempo that is piano/synthesizer/keyboard (or any single combination of those three) centric, and if guitar is thrown in, even better. Sepalcure has that style down pat on Folding Time. There's some UK-style bass in there as well, and that's all well and good, but where the album really shines is the piano/key/synth work done in this collection of tracks. Add some pretty great vocal samples and some excellent appearances from the likes of Rochelle Jordan and Angelica Bess, and you really can't go wrong with this formula. It's not anything new to be completely sure, but it really doesn't have to be if it's this well done, especially considering the palette they work with both electronic and organic instrumentation. It's held down somewhat by its lack of variation as well, but it's a phenomenal formula and they stick to it to great effect.
