3.0 good | Ben STAFF | August 17th 16 | Drawing from his previous work with Sons of Granville and experience from years of touring, Matthew Lennox
crafts a delightful instrumental folk debut. Blending acoustic and electric guitars, beatboxing, percussion work
and various looping and special effects, 'Do It For The Love' is ambitious and, for the most part, enjoyable. New
versions of his past works have become entirely different beasts, 'Spring Pt 1' sounding better than it ever has
with the added effects whilst 'One' is the closest the guy has ever come to replicating one of his stellar live
performances. Some of his new creations are also unexpected delights, 'Negative Space' being the most
impressive example with its solemn atmospheric feel. However, not all this tinkering and experimentation yields
good results; 'Come Closer' and 'Run, My Love!' are the biggest casualties, feeling overloaded with new ideas.
So much is going on, and much of it feels manufactured and tacky rather than as measured and natural as his
works usually feel. Fortunately songs like 'Come From Dust' and 'Viva' show a more restrained Matt, more
elegantly balancing his new ideas with the flamenco and classical inspired guitar work that he's known for. The
end result then is a mixed bag, but one that is well worth delving into.
