Review Summary: Civil Twilight's debut album 'Human' is a creatively brilliant alternative rock album.
Civil Twilight's (http://www.myspace.com/civiltwilightband) debut full length album entitled 'Human' has been on my iPod almost non stop for the last 2 months since I managed to get my hands on a copy.
It is such a great production and is surely going to be a big hit as the band grows in popularity through their current US tour, and following the airing of the title track 'Human' on the Super bowl Episode of House, MD.
The album kicks off with a great number in 'Anybody out there' which is a good start, but my personal favorite tracks are 'Something she said', the second song on the album, and 'What you want' which has one of the best intros to a song I have heard in ages. This album is so musically good and creatively put together, and the big instrumentals scattered throughout the songs on the album give it almost a live feel at times, and are sure to get your feet tapping and your jaw dropping.
What gives Civil Twilight such a great presence about them is the space that this three piece are able to create around each other. It's obvious that they have been playing together for ages - and because of this the music, while never really complicated, has the sense of being really big and unique.
Steve Mckellar (front-man and bassist) writes some beautifully poetic lyrics, and they are especially noticeable on the couple of slower tracks like 'Human' and 'stolen' , where his great range and vocal ability is put on display too.
Other songs to watch out for are 'Soldier' and 'Letters from the sky', which is their first Video to be released and is shot on 35mm (see it on www.civiltwilightband.com or on youtube)
All in all this album is a great debut for this talented band originally from Cape Town, South Africa, and I hope they will be a big name in the not too distant future.
