Review Summary: Solid debut but there is more to come

The Inchtabokatables were a band found in the early 90's in the former east Berlin. They made their name by playing their (often somewhat) danceable mixture of folk, rock and punk in clubs in Berlin and their debut "Inchtomanie" could hold up to this with all the faults this album has.

There are a few notable tracks on this album, "Paddy" is a fantastic instrumental, the silly "Tomatenfisch" is THE classic of the band and with its stupid theme and lyrics a runner on stage. The dark "Das Beil" is my personal highlight on this album, a tune about someone being killed by a guillotine with perfect execution (ah! don't hang me for that!).

There are also a few fillers, especially towards the end of the album, but they don't ruin this record, but make you aware that this is a debut with all its pros and cons. It's mostly a pro as it got all what you want from a debut - good, catchy, tunes and one of the bands evergreens and the con, the lenghtiness, can be overlooked with a bit of goodwill. So, if you like folk-rock, get this album, but if you are new to the Inchties i'd recommend you to get "Ultra" first.

Highlights: Paddy, Hoywoi, Das Beil

Hmm, review is not really useful for someone who doesn't know the band at all.
What about the fact that this album did what Apocalyptica made popular much later? (Using amplified classic instruments instead of guitars)

What about lyrical content? Also the term "Folk-Rock" does not do the band justice, their sound is far too unique, incorporating elements from Dark Wave, Gothic and Classic into their Folk-formula. Imho you should have described their sound in more detail since this is one of the few bands without any comparable bands.

Maybe their connection to "Feeling B" (The band that later resulted in Rammstein) could be an interesting fact too.

Anyway, to me this album is a classic and while I agree that "Ultra" is their best (produced by the mighty Justin Sullivan of New Model Army, a band Tobias Unterberg would later tour with on multple occasions), I think that this one stands on its own pretty well.

Still props for reviewing this awesome band.

Hi rasi,

well, this is my first review so I surely fucked it up I must also admit that my english language skills are rather mediocre - I did not intend to write the best review possible but rather wanted to gain some attention for the band - they are close to being forgotten even here in germany and they surely do not deserve that.

I honestly did not think about Apocalyptica, but the connection is close. But then I'm not a fan of them and don't have any of their records, so this has to be done by someone else.

Lyrically - apart from "Das Beil" - "Inchtomanie" isn't too strong but I could have better done one "Das Beil". I stand by the term "folk rock" which fits here and mind that this is not a scientific article but rather a review - there is no point in overloading the interested listener with all details about their sound and "folk rock" gives a somewhat adequate summary of their sound.

I honestly do not know much about their connection to Feeling B except that I know that there is some - I was born in 87 so I am rather young and did not experience them at their high time.
