4.0 excellent | TwigTW | March 16th 17 | The Ballad of Sexual Dependency is a multimedia collaboration between the Tiger Lillies
and photographer Nan Goldin. Goldin made a name for herself with
portraits of artists and outsiders that lived downtown (NYC) in the late 70s and early
80s. They were Goldin's friends, so she captures them at their most vulnerable: taking drugs,
naked, beaten and bruised by a lover, after sex... Her photos were originally presented as a
slide-show in clubs before a band played, but eventually made their way into museums like the
Whitney and the New York Museum of Modern Art. Goldin met Martin Jacques backstage at a Tiger
Lillies show in Brooklyn. It turned out they were fans of each other's work. (Her photos
reminded Jacques of his own youth.) They decided to collaborate on a slideshow of her
photographs with an original score composed by the band. The Ballad of Sexual Dependency is
that score. It is a single, 45 minute, piece that is meant to be played live while Goldin's
photos are flashed on a screen behind the band. It is still performed occasionally to this day
