Happy to hear Earle return to his countrified roots, surprisingly avoiding his rabid left-wing fanaticism in the process. The songwriting is average, which is also surprising. Was a little taken aback by the wear and tear in his singing voice. It's ragged, and because the material is only average, it fails to be ragged but right.

Disappointing... Most of these songs are pretty generic, the instrumentation is often clunky, Earle's vocals are pretty bad... The only really good song is the closer "Goodbye Michelangelo", a nice tribute to Guy Clark.
