Review Summary: Deeds of Flesh is one of the better known brutal death metal bands in the past decade.
Deeds of Flesh is a Brutal Death Metal band from California. The band was formed in 1994. They are signed to Unique Leader Records. I was told to check this band out last year and this is definetly the album that turned me on to a more brutal style of death metal, and thank god I checked it out otherwise I wouldn't know great bands like Necrophagist, Septic Flesh, Putrid Pile, etc...
Vocals- The vocals are my favorite part of this album by far, which is what I expected from this considering thats always been my favorite aspect of the band. The vocalist sticks to the gutturals that Deeds of Flesh are known for. They fit in real well with the riffs and the chaotic drumming. One thing can be said, if your not a fan of gutturals you most likely aren't a fan of Deeds of Flesh. The lyrics are alright on this album aswell, at times they even tink outside of the box! Every now and then the vocals can get boring.
Guitarwork- The guitarwork throughout the album is fantastic. They once again stick to the ways that they had previously used in their guitar influence, and thats to make killer riffs that have a fairly catchy sound to them. The riffs are really heavy and come out with just the right amount of distortion. Yes there are breakdowns, but when used right breakdowns can be good, and in my opinion the breakdowns are placed in perfectly exactly were I'd put them in the song, they never really interupt or kill the mood that the song is setting. This album also proves to be a bit more technical then some of their other releases, not by much but there is a minor change in the amount of technicality. I'd say the guitar department on this album beats anything guitarwise they've released before this. They do a great job keeping groove in when the speed and heaviness. The very thick and lively.
Bass- Through most of the album it is unheard. On occasion it slips in only to fade out for the rest of the song. Its a shame really considering from what you hear on the album it seems like he has talent and a really good tone. This happens with far too many bands...
Drums- The drums are good as well. The sound is excellently evened out with the guitar (volumewise) And they are a huge part of what makes this record as good as it is. The blastbeats are really fast, but they don't just stick to that blastbeat they have a very talented drummer, and with this album he really gets to show off his skill. The drumming on this album is a lot more technical then it was on previous outings. The only complaint I have in this department is the snare sound, I'm not sure what I don't like about it, its just something in the tone, I think it might have abit to much tone.
Overall I give this a 4 out of 5. Every problem they had has been smoothed out with this release, and overall I think this is their best outing. The only problem that hasn't been fixed is the bass problem, its gotten a little better but not enough for me. I reccomend this to any fan of brutal death metal or any fan of Deeds of Flesh.
