Review Summary: Bunch of DEP rip offs.
From a first impression, you’d be rather unimpressed with Knifemill Disintigrator’s debut EP. It does little that the genre of Grindcore hasn’t already done, it’s got fast beats, deathish/punkish guitar lines, deathcore-inspired chugging throughout. It pretty much rips off of much better bands that have already done this sound 100x better. But upon closer look you see that this EP has more to offer than first expected, and you start to realize, hey, these guys could be good.
But at that, you still realize this album still is heavy in flaws. This album is much like a mash-up between Dillinger Escape Plan and average Grindcore, which at times means good and bad. Essentially, the instrumentation is very good for the most part, and the songwriting is surprisingly inspired for the most part, with mixture of Suffocation-style song structures, DEP’s oddball time structure and tech riffing. But for the most part, it seems like the band isn’t trying to invent, but rather trying to copy from supierior artists. This is mostly the case, seeing as the bands performances resemble everything about DEP, from the screaming, which sounds scarily similar to Greg Puciato, to the drumming, which is similar to that of Gil Sharon’s styling.
But at the same time though, the delivery of this album is excellent. Each song is a quick punch in the face of intense riffing, harsh screams, and just everything you could want from a grindcore band that, strangely, no band recently has been able to deliver decently. It’s so frantic, yet surprisingly interesting, that you really don’t care how many bands they rip off. Thankfully, there’s Knifemill Disintigrator, a band whose ripping off of DEP actually helps them more than it hurts them, making them a significantly better group. Instead of ripping off a bunch of grind groups and metalcore groups, they rip off grind groups and one spectacular band, and come out for the better.
