This band would have been the best band of the 21st century had it not been for the band's self-destructive personalities. Cyborg, a self-loathing drug pusher from Chino, and Tron, a meth-addicted civil war reenacter were bound for failure. Though, while their brainchild, DRACULACORE, was alive, it provided the world with some of the most passionate and technical music of the new millenium. They chronicled life as depressed robots living in a human world. On this, their first and last album,
spul nation, Cyborg and Tron form an allegiance with the undead in an attempt to foil the Pope's romp through the past in his Delorian. It is a concept album in the truest sense of the idea. It pushes the musical envelope in ways that no band ever done before. Now a year after recording was finished and thousands of record label disputes, DRACULACORE have put out their crowning masterpiece on their own, DIY, from the heart.
The album begins with "The Way Blood Trickles Down a Young Virgin's Neck." The song starts with the old salty dog line, but wait, suddenly, coming down from the trees, the song changes. It spills out into a dissonant cacophony that dies out before it can strangle its victim. The song then sleepily descends into the most beautiful trip hop song of all time. The swelling background symbolizes Tron's swelling emotional rush as he is constantly maintaining his addiction. The consistent and pure drumline represents Cyborg's financial backbone for their operation. The flaky and scattered guitar solo that propels the song into the infinite expansion of the human condition and the dementia it induces, represents the elusiveness of this vigilante Pope. Life first is birthed in this song.
Only to be taken away by the next one. Such is the fragility of DRACULACORE and life itself. "What Did The Deaf, Dumb, and Blind Boy Get For Christmas?" responds in the only way it knows: Cancer. This song chronicles the protagonist's mentor's descent to the grave. Dracula's ailment and malignant growths in his canines are starving him of blood, and Tron and Cyborg cathartically scream "Cancer, cancer" under a flurry of grind backdrops. Never has paternal love been so real in the musical medium.
After that the Pope and medical science decide to strike a truce on their ongoing way to stifle Tron and Cyborg, who have called a jihad and promise of death on both groups. Here begins "Optimus Prime, 5 Digiorno Pizzas, and a Bag of Condoms Makes One Awkward Morning After." This song's unyielding complexity reflects the political ties being made between the Pope and Science as the two meet for stolen sweet nothing in a lover's alleyway. Their political relationship spawned a homosexual love that they had to hide from their parents. Through the blastbeats and blurred guitar lines, Tron and Cyborg attempt to reveal their seemingly blasphemous relations to the Pope's God. This is 22 seconds of drama and deceit.
After this Tron and Cyborg gain some help from Apollo Creed as the song "Apollo Creed Aux Champs Elys"es" chronicles. Creed recognized Tron and Cyborg's true drive to be number one and took them to the place where he learned to become the Tiger: Paris. In the city Tron and Cyborg learn boxing, martial arts, and racial injustice. This song documents their training and triumph of becoming the Tiger. After an extended meditation this song ends as they kill their master, in the truest sense of poetic justice. The amazing guitar solo documents their passionate destruction of Carl Weathers and the laughter that follows in the sadistic revelry of Cyborg as he laughs at Apollo's death sputters. Such is the sadism of the Tiger. Death spares not the tiger.
Meanwhile, the Pope has fallen into the underground of South Central and Watts with "xBoyzxInxThexHoodx." He learned rapping and krumping as a means to hide out with Science until Tron and Cyborg abandon their quest, and god finally lays off the whole "fag joke thing." To pay his bills Pope learns how to rap and competes in rap battles to gain respect and income. The song manages to mix acoustic rock and rap together in a synthesis unheard of since the summer of 1978 when we were all young. When Pope thinks he has finally made it Tron and Cyborg locate him and come kill his Science. Inspired to destroy Tron and Cyborg they all teleport back to the future in Pope's Delorian for one final shoot out in the Vatican, which has turned into a Wild West like desert since the Pope was gone.
So begins "Shaved, Humid, and Definitely Not in English." Tremolo guitar lines mix with grind and the noise the aliens from Mars Attack make to produce the unheralded passion of Tron and Cyborg's plight. They play off of each other's vocal lines like young children frolicking through a meadow made of barbed wire and infanticide. In that meadow they smother the Pope, killing him for good, and ending his horrible tyranny over Transylvania. The song ends with their true breakdown and death. Tron and Cyborg, mere robots, ascend into the junkpile in the sky to forever be remember as the ones who died for our sins.
Amen.
This album is so brutally real it goes all the way around and becomes fake and then real again but this time not as real as before. It is one of those albums that produces such honest angst and emotional clarity through its jarring storyline that nobody will ever understand the brilliance of this album. Everything is here to make this the best album of all, but like all transcendent things in life, it manages to fall apart.
