Hammill's best album since 1990's Out of Water. A terrific documentary on the near-death experience. The best track, "White Dot" is one of the milestones of his career, a tragic vision of nothingness built upon terrifying chopped, ghostly vocals. "Meanwhile My Mother" is another highlight, with its heart-breaking lyrics about the decline of his ill mother, which are all the more powerful thanks to the calm, peaceful music. And so on: the provocative "Famous Last Words", which recalls the wonderful 1986's "Other Old Cliches", the warm acoustic "Naked to the Flame", which sums up his empathetic *and* satirical tendencies and combines them with his experimental sense, etc. make this album an unforgettable experience. Only "Vainglorious Boy" disappoints, but with so many hits it would be foolish not to expect any misses. Overall, if you like sensitive music with thoughtful, sincere lyrics and don't mind an experiment or two, you can't go wrong with Singularity.
