Review Summary: A lost artefact brought back to life.

After listening to this EP a myriad of times, it’s fairly easy to gauge what the casual HEALTH fan will get out of Dimensions In Noise – the conclusion: not a lot. For the hardcore, unrelenting lunatic who wants to consume every morsel of sound this band is willing to throw out there (a.k.a. me), there is a novel amount of enjoyment to be found in this fluttering fifteen minutes of ambient noise. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, context certainly helps the situation. This is a 2020 remaster of the EP in question – a lost artefact that was made in limited numbers and given to people who purchased Get Color upon its release. So, in that regard, Dimensions In Noise was a supplemental bonus made to incentivise potential pundits at the time. Fast-forward eleven years however, and what we have here is an obscure time capsule that displays various samples and sounds which would eventually worm their way onto the Max Payne 3 Soundtrack. In terms of its remaster, Dimensions In Noise has received a subtle shade of nuance, punch and clarity, but by and large retains its original form.

Content wise, this is a particularly unique offering as it essentially gives away ideas for future works – like when Kirk Hammett lost his phone with a number of vaulted riffs and ideas, only HEALTH actually sign-off on the idea and make Dimensions In Noise a reality. Of course, it’s easy to say this in hindsight, since we know what this blueprint would later become, but these ideas wouldn’t flourish for another three years. The base sound largely experiments with three guitar notes drowned in delay, only they’re the same three notes that would later compose “Painkiller” for the Max Payne 3 Soundtrack: elusive but touched upon in “00001”, and then fully present on “00004”. Less overt experiments make it sound more poignant and chaotic in “00003”, but generally, it’s “Painkiller” segmented into four tracks. As I’ve already said, there isn’t a great deal here for casual listeners, but for the elite fan there’s a nice story burrowing underneath Dimensions In Noise, one that lets you get a better understanding of what HEALTH were messing with before their inevitably sublime Max Payne 3 Soundtrack.

Neither did I lol it’s one thing I love about this band; they’ve done so much off the radar stuff in their time.
