To think that 'The Man Is Dead' is the debut release from Australian outfit The Jezabels is astounding, since everything about its 5 tracks suggests the work of mature veterans. All 4 band members contribute terrifically, as gorgeous piano melodies combine seamlessly with hooky indie-pop guitar & surprisingly heavy drums. And then there is the marvelously expressive vocal range of Hayley Mary, whose peaks & troughs assist the Arcade Fire like build-ups. Ambitious, always enthralling & without a weak song, this spellbinding 20 minutes is one hell of an astonishing achievement. Recommended Tracks: Be A Star, Disco Biscuit Love & Unmarked Helicopters.

Crazy to think that this was their debut. My only real complaint is that, considering both this and 'She's So Hard' came out 2009, why not putting them both together as a whole album, since the styles of both EPs hardly shift.

Nice dream pop/art pop that's quite nostalgic/National-esque at times.. Amazing that this was their debut given how nicely produced it is and how compositionally creative it can get. Impressively mature. 2-4 are a bit too art pop for me, they're not quite my cuppa, but I respect them, they're good tracks. The end of 3 is really nice. 5 is a jam, nice drumming and all, and 1 is not far behind it - don't know if it is a happy song or a sad song and I like that. 3.6

Be a star is their best song ever. And that means something. Overall a great debut.
