Review Summary: A endless groove of the most goofy yet enjoyable music, from a band that speaks the truth!
Lets start off with the band. DEVO. Meaning de-evolution or devolving. Devo uses this tagline by insisting that people are devolving. They use this in seemingly a serious tone, but some might think its a scheme. Now the Album title. Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! Right their the album is a 5. nah im just kidding their are better reasons. Like the cover being of first Puerto Rican golfer in the golf hall of fame Juan "Chi Chi" Rodriguez. Which has pretty much nothing to do with the album or band. Its stuff like that that makes Devo's first album so good. Last but not least the reviewer. ME. First review so be mean. I wont learn unless you attack me so much i have no choice but to consider suicide. Now I have been listening to Devo since I was a kid. Being raised on punk music and everything that comes from punk you wouldnt think devo would b the band i was most intrigued by but i was. Lets Start with The album shall we...
1.Uncontrollable Urge 4/5- a fine open. Has a catchy beat and lures you in. Nice chorus. All these good thing from a song about having an urge for sex that is just to damn uncontrollable. When i hear the song I love it So groovy so fun. But when I read it or look back it just doesn't stick with me. So not best tune but quite good.
2.(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction 5/5- Its better than the original. I know how the rolling stones started a revolution with their music. Well guess what? I DON'T CARE! This song is better. To think they played it on Saturday night live like a week or something after the stones did. Its much more different than the stones version. Much less boring.
3.Praying Hands 3.5/5- This songs weird. Kinda has a message of doing the same thing everyday and obeying laws and how its like dumb or something? hahaha. Punk rebellion from DEVO!!! The part with the cops cool though.
4.Space junk 3/5- To be honest I got no clue what this songs about. It sounds like its about some girl that gets hit with something from space. Then they just start naming places. Now its pretty cool but just basic. I also Like how when the name southern states they give a hick accent. Endings cool too.
5.Mongoloid 5/5- Okay best Devo song Right here. Everything about it is perfect. Sweet synth sound, excellent drumming( basic but intriguing). Meaning behind the song is Just insanely sweet. Its about a mongoloid oran individual with down syndrome who carries an average life. Its critizied for being mean to people with down syndrome. But I think its a good story about someone who lives a good normal life. Go Devo!
6.Jocko Homo 5/5- Okay THIS is the best Devo song. Devo's anthem. Cry their "are we not men" slogan out and demand respones. That we are DEVO! SOngs Delicious from the fun and quite odd pattern of drums to the breakdown that nods to their de-evolution theory. Also the music video is really good and weird i recommend that even if you hate devo. You bitch.
7.Too much Paranoias 2/5- Boring song overall. Only Skippable song on the album. I dont care if your having a big mac attack Devo.
8.Gut Feeling-Slap your Mammy 5/5- opens with pretty good guitar, and devo's instrument abilities usually aren't something to write home about. Also great Synth. Infact whole album has good synth. I'm sorry i didn't say that sooner. after the intro Lyrics about the gut feeling us dudes get when that girly is all over you and you got that gut feeling that she is a grimy babe. Actually not bad lyrics from an album that most lyrics are mostly lame attempts at sounding like your talking about something other then sex. Then it turns into slap your mammy. Nothing wrong here. Fast part with just fun coming out of it.
9. Come Back Jonee 3.5/5- Kind of a not devo song. Still devo though. I don't know who the songs about. I always thought it was about JFK since his picture is on the single cover. But the J in jfk doesn't stand for jonee. And the stroy is about a cool guy named jonee that gets hit by a car. And i know jfk wasn't hit by a car. He was shot in the head then teleported to the underground space lab on the sun. Where the creator MOLAR fixed him and sent him to Jupitar to fight evil.
10. Sloppy (I saw my baby Gettin') 4/5- One of my personal favorite songs, and i bet everyone that hears it deep down really likes it. Great song. You really have to hear it to get the understanding of what the song mean. Lets just say it got sloppy when i missed the hole.
11. Shrivel up 4/5- Now this isn't devo. Doesn't sound like devo. Sounds like a band with catchy tunes with easy finding dirty lyrics...i guess thats devo. Well cool song. Great drums. Hilarious lyrics like much of the others and a fun yet weird way to end the album.
Well people, I hope you enjoy Devo as much as i do, and im sure this review can help you with ur devo needs. Because we all need a little Devo. It just happens that devo knows exactly what we need and deliver it with an amazing album.
