3.5 great | Herbie Chrost | April 29th 16 | Maybe it's because I just love Pretty Hate Machine a lot but this is a cleverly compiled compilation of Pretty Hate Machine demos. Actually, they're so well done, the demo incarnations of those that later appear on PHM that they instead sound like alternate takes or remixes of the songs (ironically, the incarnation of Down in it that appears on PHM is a remix of Down in It as it appears on here). Not to mention the flow of this sounds less like a thrown together comp and more like a low budget studio album. However, what most impresses me here is the epic production job on the songs; don't be fooled, although they're demos, this is stuff that I can only compare to the crazy panning and subtely that is pervaded in The Downward Spiral. rIgnore the low rating for this, anyone who is a fan of NIN or want a refreshing take on the black sheep of the NIN discography, give this a listen as soon as possible. Also thank god the remaster for this is nowhere near as brickwalled as the one for PHM's

2.0 poor | jday | November 5th 12 | This is an awful record. But it's true value is not really in it's listenability, definitely not that. It's really best as a peek into the creative process of making an album, and an early NIN one at at that.
