Review Summary: An album that may not bring anything new to the genre, but it's still a solid album that demonstrates Snoh's strengths
I haven't reviewed an album in a while, as I didn't have the same passion as I had before. However, I motivated myself yesterday to do an album review and I heard this album. Just to make it clear, I have not listened to an album by Snoh Aaleagra, so this was an interesting listening experience. "Temporary Highs In The Violet Skies" might not be a game changing album for the genre, but it's still very solid.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this album and its production quality for the most part. Snoh shines throughout this album and demonstrates a mesmerizing singing voice that carries a lot of the tracks. No ID, The Neptunes, Christian Rich and Tyler, The Creator were involved in the production of the album and many of them did a wonderful job, especially Pharrell and Tyler. While "Indecisive" is an okay opener to the album, "Lost You" and "In Your Eyes" keep the momentum going. "Lost You" is a highlight on the album, showcasing Snoh's vocal ability and Pharrell's production on "In Your Eyes" (not to be confused with The Weeknd's song of the same name) is excellent, although some of his adlibs can be a bit annoying.
One of the things I was excited about this record is the Tyler, The Creator features, "Neon Peach" and "In The Moment". Both tracks work really well and Snoh and Tyler share wonderful chemistry on both tracks. "Neon Peach" does feel like a Tyler, The Creator song with Snoh, while "In The Moment" both she and Tyler play off each other well. One of my favorite tracks on the album is "Violet Skies", which is phenomenal. From the production to the songwriting and the vocals, "Violet Sky" is a contender for my favorite song the album and even moments like "Everything" and "We Don't Have to Talk About It" are highly engaging.
There are some tracks that I didn't care much for, such as "Taste", which didn't do much for me, and "Temporary Highs", which I found a bit boring. There are some songs that feel quite similar to each other and the album does feel dragged on towards the end. Still, Temporary Highs In The Violet Skies is an interesting album to listen to, demonstrating Snoh's willingness to experiment with different sounds and shining as a vocalist while delivering a fun experience. I would love to dive more into her discography and revisit this record at some point.
