4.0 excellent | musichub | November 12th 21 | For a long while, this was the most famous of Josquin's late-career masses, full of contrapuntal harmonic lines and curiously-administered arrangings of the voices. Despite its somber tone, moments in this piece are unusually bombastic for Josquin, and each movement is based on a traditional plainsong melody - perhaps more of a callback than a look to the future.
