Review Summary: Sorry for post-rocking

Sweden’s Oh Hiroshima emerged at the tail end of post-rock’s widely perceived heyday (their first EP was released in 2009) and, unlike many of their erstwhile peers, they’re still chugging along now. Myriad is the group’s fourth full-length, and continues the band’s tradition of quality releases. While Oh Hiroshima still can’t really be said to be innovators, they remain reliable purveyors of well-done post-rock, with generous sides of shoegaze and post-metal. Their latest album’s seven songs blend somber beauty and a persistent sense of menace into a compelling package, one that may be said to have been done before, but is nonetheless quite successful. Opener “Nour” starts things off right, with an ominous intro leading into post-punk-esque vocals that filter into stridently epic guitar work, providing quite a rousing beginning. The martial drum beats alongside gorgeous guitar in “All Things Pass” form another highlight, while the more subdued (but beautiful) closer “Hidden Chamber” gently goads the listener into hitting play again as soon as the album’s finished. All told, this is a fairly short record (under thirty-nine minutes), but one for which brevity seems an asset rather than a disappointment. Here’s hoping brevity also wears well on this review, but really, what more is there to say? If you’ve made it this far, you probably already know whether this album is something you’re interested in. If, in 2022, you still sense the appeal of a largely conventional post-rock record (albeit a somewhat unusually vocal-centric and punchy one), then by all means Myriad is just the album for you, a gripping listen in a genre which rarely gets its due these days. For those in the opposite camp, thanks for reading my glorified soundoff anyways!

While my typical reviewing style is on the mildly shorter side, I've always admired a well-written "soundoff style" review. This is my first attempt at the style, not sure how well it turned out, but felt this was an appropriate album for the attempt.

10/10 summary. def checking this bc i need some post rock to underscore my thesis writing-induced crying lol

also very sweet & self aware shorty, my only suggestion would be deleting 'the' in front of 'post-rock's' in the first sentence!

hmm maybe my expectations were a lil too high bc of dust and disquiet in the rec sec, but this didn't do a whole lot for me

Ah, that's too bad Jesper... Might be worth a few chances, I will say this grew on me quite a bit.

Great review, sunny, you're in top form

Always had a soft spot for this band, something about them sets them apart from most of their crescendocore contemporaries

Thanks Pika, appreciate the kind words! I've liked this band for a long time as well.

@botb, hope you enjoy! Band name might be a little iffy but it's extremely "2000s post-rock" in vibe to me, so it sorta works.

hey this is pretty solid -- i think the production is great, the vocals are nice but don't distract from the post-ness, and the song structures have juuuust enough variety to not feel like generic crescendocore

good writeup sunny, thanks for spotlighting this

I think I tried this band out once before and it didn’t fit. Wrong size. Looking around Post Rock Emporium - not much catches my eye lately - I may give them a shot again. Excellent review Sunny and thanks.
