Review Summary: As standard as the starting weapon.
Modern Warfare 3 was a great installment in the Call of Duty franchise. It has everything like, uh, shooting people in the ***ing face. To match the gameplay, the music is 1000% a generic action soundtrack. It’s about the safest possible choice, sounding like I’m listening to G.I. Joe or something similar. There’s a lot of strings, pummeled percussion, and perfectly mixed horns to bring that war-like atmosphere, but it’s built to be more cinematic than bloody and traumatic for the listener. It’s exceedingly safe, and especially disappointing because I know Brian Tyler can do better.
Modern Warfare 3’s soundtrack conventionally puts you in the mood to save the mighty U.S. of A. which is all it needs to do. The downfall is almost every song sounds exactly the same. A bummer, but what did you expect? It’s another typical video game soundtrack, one good enough to accompany gameplay, but not memorable in any particular direction. It’s a solid enough soundtrack with enough oorah, but less than halfway through it starts to drag. The mind-numbing repetition might be fine when shooting humans repetitively - the gunfire drowning out the music - but standing alone, the soundtrack does not hold up. This is music for shooting faces, but not for repeated, isolated listens. It’s decently slick and bombastic enough, but standout portions are so lacking the whole experience becomes mundane.
