To counter the few users here that call this a step-up from the band's previous work, I found 'The Worm' to be a conceptually weak and indecisive concept album that relies too heavily on ill-conceived "experimentation" and jazz or blues influences that mostly the band is not skilled enough to convincingly bring together into a functioning package. The album mostly sounds like a mismanaged fever dream with too cacophonous an attitude to unblind itself from its own shallowness.

The UK-based band finally did it, they created the perfect album they have been building towards since their wacky-sounding post-punk debut EP in 2018. ?The Worm? really shares nothing with what their debut album and EP were reaching for, but the band pivot their sound to new heights with boisterous vocals, enchanting progressive instrumentals, and a focus on theatrics. The Rock opera record shares a lot in common with what has made the best in the genre stand out, while also pulling from true greats in the styles of progressive rock music. All of this is accumulated in a tight and neat package of 9 songs, just over 40 minutes that will have you coming back over and over to the deceiver who is ?the worm?, why are these people worshipping it, and what happens when you kill it. A true masterclass of what you can do with theatrical lyricism and punchy rock instrumentals that keep you engaged from start to finish.

Musically this feels like a step up from their previous full length but in terms of songwriting, hooks and replayability it feels like a tiny bit of a step down. The concept of the album is fine and actually helps drive the proggy, artsy, operatic themes of the music very well but in the end the concept isn't a story to really be entranced by. 'Saddest Worm Ever' rules.

Big and grand and operatic record that should maybe have stayed in the West End? Nothing strikes me as atrociously awful here, it just tries a lot of things that simply don't land as magnificent (as it was apparently intended) - like wtf is that Sinnerman cover?

I genuinely would have preferred a West Of Eden Part II over this... but it's so bizarre, narrative-driven, over-the-top, and catchy that I can't hate it, I just can't. The themes of climate and capitalist destruction are not new, but they're as relevant and compelling as ever. What really elevates this out of the prog muck is how the narrative, concept, and execution align: the sheer number of styles and genres that are devoured by the worm are impressive. More importantly, the worm's short lifespan - clocking in a little over 40 minutes - shows real restraint. In the hands of a lesser band this could have easily become a bloated monstrosity twice as long and half as interesting.

Totally overwhelming. I am impressed how fresh, complex and solid this album is. It is on a constant repeat and I actually measure time by spins: "Hey, when you'll be back home, honey?" "In a two The Worms, babe".

I do miss that West of Eden sound, but a big appeal of HMLTD for me was the over the top drama on a lot of their songs so them doing what's basically a musical on here makes sense. Not a Mikey's Song or LOADED to be found on here, but it makes up for it with the sheer weirdness and theatrics all over.
