0.0 | zenhead | May 7th 23 | As is the case for many older Argentine releases, Menos Que Cero never get the recognition they deserve, mainly due to the language difference and inaccessibility to a comprehensive list of artists from certain eras in a language that ISN’T spanish.
"Grabaciones Inéditas", released by the legendary but largely forgotten Indice Virgen label in 1999, is a generally forgotten classic of an era of many great bands that have been left behind by the passage of time. It’s a no-nonesense power pop/slacker rock anthology of a band long gone and it’s damn good. Like all good power pop albums, it features great vocal harmonies and catchy hooks, the real standout track being “Kodak ‘74”, although other tracks like opener “Días Muertos” and some of the 1994 demos are also lovely.
While many assume the genre of power pop nowadays to be bands that want to be Cuomo and the Weezers, the power pop on display here (as well as the rest of the power pop scene of the time in Argentina) actually took its cues from the (nowadays) lesser known Teenage Fanclub rather than the boys from California. It’s extremely catchy, upbeat and, most of all, ***ing awesome.
A must listen for power pop fans looking for a change of pace.
