Review Summary: Flawless grunge exercise from an exiled Russian band
Apache Rose is yet another rock band in the sleigh of nostalgic alternative acts. Started in Russia by the mastermind Ilya Novokhatskiy in the last decade Apache Rose made some waves in the local scene releasing a handful of releases and gaining a little traction in the niche. As of 2023, the moving force behind the collective is as expected residing in Georgia, describing it as “exile”.
The band puts a lot of emphasis on their relocation, claiming on their Instagram that they are “a band from Russia you should [still] listen to!”. Well, Cabin Fever is a vigorous alt-rock hymn somewhere between the best parts of Incubus and Weezer – the track can boast some quality post-production and a classic display of grungier rock and roll songwriting.
It ain’t exactly heavy or exactly hit, but it has some balls and catchy tunes.
The band is notably beyond the category of amateurs, executing their stuff with certain skill and elegance, which is fair for every aspect of the song. The guitar department is rich with sound and fancy solo work, the vocals hit just the right bits, and the rhythm section bubbles somewhere underneath all that.
The video for Cabin Fever is also made in consideration of zeitgeist: it’s a midjourney generated continuation of abstract frames. And just like everything with this song it’s okay.
This new song by Apache Rose is an example of a thing inside itself, a self serving rocking for the sake of rocking. Who’d miss it in case it wasn’t released – this question is yet to be answered.
