Indeed it's kind of a shame how dull this turns, given how great Chinouriri's formula of soulful indie pop rock can get in its best moments.

Rachel Chinouriri?s debut album, ?What a Devastating Turn of Events,? presents a noteworthy foray into indie music, marked by her adept execution and clear homage to classic indie influences. The standout element of the album, however, is Rachel?s angelic R&B/soul vocals. Her voice, both powerful and emotive, promises great potential for a distinct and evolving sound as her career progresses. While there are many strengths to admire, the album does encounter a lull with some bland instrumentals that permeate the middle sections. This contrasts starkly with the more compelling tracks that bookend the album, highlighting inconsistencies in engagement and energy. Overall, ?What a Devastating Turn of Events? is a promising debut that shows significant potential. As Rachel matures as an artist, her unique sound is sure to crystallize, potentially elevating her future work to new heights.

Sadly, even if her mighty pop fusion into indie rock is often successful and some of the songs are indeed great, the first single off the album released 2 whole years prior (!), "All I Ever Asked", somehow remained the highest high on this. Somehow it all drags on a bit, varies not that much, despite the stylistic shifts and twists at every turn, and her vocals turn out not to carry well over a longer runtime.
