Review Summary: Before Their Eyes - consistently inconsistent Post hardcore band Before Their Eyes are a band that has continually flattered to deceive. With two full lengths, a self titled album and “The Dawn of my Death” under their belt they acquired the reputation of band with undoubted potential but one which was lacking in focus. Despite the inconsistency of their previous efforts they had conjured a stable base of devoted fans that were drawn to what was an almost unique sound, arguably going against the current trends of post hardcore they produced. There has been transformation in modern post hardcore following the rapid rise in popularity of neighbouring genre melodic metalcore. Before Their Eyes were seen as one of the few post hardcore bands distancing themselves from adapting their sound accordingly. Could they extend upon this, staying true to their roots and finally realise their potential?
Unfortunately not, while they seem to experiment profusely with the sound in album “Untouchable” they flirt with genres that are often plagiarised by a multitude of bands and tend to follow a generic song writing style throughout. Before Their Eyes try their hand at being the jack of all trades assembling a record consisting predominantly of metalcore, radio friendly pop punk and even a hamfisted attempt at country. Unfortunately, it comes across as disjointed and bland. Most alarming is that the record is barely marketable to fans of either pop punk or of metalcore, primarily because of its obvious lack of quality but because the album is so blatantly split between the two genres. The pop punk comes across as a vastly inferior alternative to Mayday Parade while the metalcore sounds like a product of their label mates “Attack Attack!” without the syrupy keys.
The band's focus seems blurred more than ever as the catchy hooks of “The Dawn of my Death” are traded for chugged palm mutes and mindless arpeggios for the most part. Melody has not been completely eradicated as lead vocalist Nick Moore pours out his melodic cleans to better effect than in their past releases, he is utilised to better effect in the poppy areas of the album. Songs like “Sing To Me”, while being painfully vacant in the lyrical department are reasonably pleasant and exhibit the more positive melodic side of Before Their Eyes.
Instrumentally there is nothing extraordinary to report, all musicians seem competent on their weapons of choice but rarely venture into anything that could be considered creative. Drummer Jarret Hottman is the only member who comes out with any real credibility, his use of the sticks proves to be the main highlight of the album. The vocals are adequate, typical dual vocalists provide relative variation with harsh screams and melodic cleans.
In conclusion, the album is hampered not only by the numerous misplaced breakdowns but by the fact the band has become another faceless, record company cash cow and has in due course alienated its previous fans. You won’t find any post hardcore on here.

they're obviously trying to sound more 'pop' but still can't shake the stale screaming and breakdowns. and the 'pop' songs on this album suck hard.

bloc, i was doing something when i was listening to the album first time and that breakdown suddenly came and i swear my ears perked up like cats ears. That alone probably clinched this as a 2 and not a 1.5.

I was fully awake and rocking to Hey Dude in the beginning and then I start dozing off until the last song comes on and I hear that OH OH OH OH echo thing during the last breakdown, holy hell I was in love.

Yeah, Miss May I have a few glossy vocal effects like that. Its amazing how many albums like this get such clean production these days. Even when I think back to albums like The Darkest Red, only from 2005 there was none of this crazy stuff used.
