Boris " Pink

With every Boris album I get, makes me feel the same way. I think to myself "Now how the hell do they sound so damn good?" I am consistently wowed by there sound-shifting ways. Boris' latest album Pink is no different.

I'm gonna say this right of the bat, Pink is one of the most powerful albums I have heard in a long time. By the time the fourth track Nothing Special ends, your brain is completely fried. But don't let the "White Pony era Deftones-ish sound" of the intro track Farewell fool you into thinking, "Ohh, this is nice", because now its gut-check time, the title track Pink hits you like a ton of bricks, and you quickly realize;

This is not nice,
This is Balls-To-The-wall
Rock and Roll,
This is loud,
This is Dirty,
This is great

But this is only the beginning with loud guitars, awesome solos and catchy vocal melodies, this song is a winner. After pink another wave of sounds hits you, and Woman on the screen begins with rapid-fire snare, and a riff that's to die for. But sadly its too short, at only about two and a half minutes, this left me wanting more. And that exactly what you get on Nothing Special. This is loud, this is really loud. I thought my speakers had blown the first time I heard it. The song is mostly bass and drums, with the guitar supplying some nice noise/feedback that is until its solo time. It starts out like a Thurston Moore or Page Hamilton style noise flurry, but quickly turns into a nice climactic ending.

Finally a breather, Blackout harkens back to old school Boris, slow and powerful. This song crushes. The droning chords, and the feedback drenched lead harmonize so well, this song reels you in, its absolutely hypnotic, a great track Next comes, Electric; a scorching instrumental. This song has such a powerful groove. It makes me want to dance every time I hear it. Electric is followed up by Pseudo-bread; this is a down and dirty rocker. The music chugs at a nice pace, with super distorted guitar and vocals that have so much swagger they would make Mick Jagger blush. The "Woo-hoo's" in the background add to this in great effect. Eventually the fuzz overtakes everything and Afterburner kicks in. It's got a nice jam vibe; things seem reel lazy and kicked back, a great contrast to Pseudo-bread, and a good song to top it off.

Six three times, or 666 is another good track with cool guitar work, and a catchy beet. But it doesn't really go anywhere, not a bad song. But one could call it the low point of the album. My Machine brings things full circle, the sound has returned to the floating clean sound found in Farewell. Things don't stay clean for long. Just Abandoned My-self, kicks in and rocks for about ten minutes strait. This song is relentless, some of the most energetic guitar playing I have ever heard, but that's not it, everything is incredible on this track. If I had to pick a stand out this would be it. There isn't a single thing wrong with this song.

When all is said and done, and you have listened to the album all the way through, chances are you're going to hit repeat, it's that good. For me this album is a classic, an easy 5 out of 5, but for a lot of people it probably won't be. This is because of the only two negatives about the album;

1) They sing in Japanese
2) The production can almost be too dirty at times.

Now number one isn't so much a negative for me, it cant be helped.. they are Japanese. But I can understand some people not liking it, Number two on the other hand will turn some people off; this record is loud as hell. But all things considered this is a great album, easily a 4.75, and a must buy for any fan of rock music.

I really like this album, and the Direction Boris are going in all-together, They are always trying something new, and 99% of the time its great.

They release so many albums a year, I cant really believe that they always put out quality albums.

I don't really know what I was expecting. I do like it (it's good to great), but it failed to deliver what I wanted.

Ah well.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and give it 3.5This Message Edited On 05.10.06

The US version of this was released recently, a few of the tracks are longer, especially the last one which has a wicked ending.

Pink is a great album overall, but I think they did the dirty rock and roll songs a little better on Heavy Rocks, and I like the production on that album better. Pink has a lot of variety though, and I especially love the first track, which is something completely different from anything I've heard from Boris.

'Tis a nice one. Even though it's basically a balls-out rock album (more like garage rock with sludgy guitars than stoner rock though) it still retains something of both an experimental and a melodic edge. Farewell, Nothing Special, Blackout and Afterburner (love the chorus) are the definite winners on here IMHO.

I loved the first track but the rest of the album disappointed me. I guess I was looking for more epic stuff like "Parting."
