Danko Jones, that means Rock music. Nothing more, nothing less. It's basic, it's solid. It seems a bit Punk infuenced here and there, sometimes sounds a bit like Queens of the Stone age to me. The three piece band around singer and guitarist Danko Jones present well played old-school flavored rock without any fancy "way up there" guitar lines or solos. They all know their instruments, solid rythm section, good guitar. Nice work done on this record.
"Wait, that's it? Why the heck should I listen to this band and record? Sounds pretty average to me..."
Good question. The record comes with a playtime of roughly 34 minutes. All songs are straight forward, no song is in really slow. Though it all is basic, it's a blast to listen to it because of the energy that the tracks have. The songs sound quite similar, but this energy that is transported still makes them fun.
The main point about this band, and that makes it so enjoyable for me are the lyrics. Nothing but Sex and Love is the topic here. Or at least 98% of the time. And that in a way that's really funny and in a way really honest. Which makes the record maybe a bit unfitting for the younger audience... ;)
Examples? Sure. Take the song "First Date" for example. This is from a short interlude, introduced by a door bell:
"Well hello baby, you look so hot tonight. Can I hold your hand? Oh thank you. Now this is what we're gonna do on our date today. We're gonna do all the things couples like to do. We're gonna go to a movie, we're gonna have some dinner, have a walk in the moonlight and anything you like to do baby. But I have a question... do you kiss on the first date? Do you do it on the first date!"
It's underlined by the way Jones stresses different parts and how he sings/tells it. I always have a good laugh. As well as on the follow up song, "Invisible":
"I crash my house - just for you. I burn my house down - just for you. I rip my nuts off - just for you"
The lyrics are obscure, the way it is sung really adds to the fact. And though some things really come over as funny, there is actually a thing or two to think about the thought behind it. Even though some of the things might be a bit cliche. Well, after all, the topic is love. And sex. And disappointment from both. Which makes it a good soundtrack after break ups or if your just waving the finger at relationships.
Let's sum it up: Danko Jones play rock. It's basic, it's solid, it's dirty. But, foremost, it rocks, it's fun. A lot of the appeal comes from the lyrics and how they are presented. If you don't dig the lyrics... well, I guess this could be a bit... boring. But if they are your kind of thing, I suggest checking this band and album out. You will get a nice record that will surely entertain you for a good while. :thumb:
