Review Summary: The Butt Trumpets didn’t care if you liked there music then (1994) and really don’t care now, because they no longer exist.
So why write a review of a 16 year old album that no one has ever heard of and certainly doesn’t care about? Well, I’m glad you asked…. Because Its memorable. That is way more than I can say for about half of the some odd 10,000 albums I would realistically estimate I’ve listened to over the last couple of decades. I simply refuse to believe that this album deserves to go down in the annals of punk history without most punk fans having given it at least one good run through. I feel that it is unique enough to at least make the suggestion. I probably would have rated it higher back in the day but I still like to pull it out once in a while and listen to it because it is still pretty amusing.
The Butt Trumpet’s "Primitive Enema" is a Raucous cacophony of smut, raunch and profanity railing against grunge when grunge was King. I originally heard the edited single "I'm Ugly And I Don't Know Why" on the famous radio station KROQ out of California which would lead me to believe there are people outside of my youthful mid-east clique that are familiar with this album. A very amusing song that received air play all the way over in ohio. That’s pretty impressive for a crap Punk band from a state that is literally littered with crap punk musicians and to do so in 1994 no less makes it even more impressive.
Say what you want about Ohio but we have some great record stores and so In this Pre Windows 95’ world I went to one of our great record stores and found the album that contained the amusing song I had heard on the radio. Let me say that that album got passed around more than (insert joke about whore here). Not a single person that borrowed it didn’t find it at least amusing and still make reference to it via quote to this day. In all fairness these were all people that at least enjoyed punk on some level and didn’t mind some serious toilet humor.
From gang bangs to (as the tile suggests) enemas the call and response theme running between Dan Druff and the women in the group lends greatly to its amusing quality. Realistically this album is probably best left to the younger punk fans as I was when I got it but if you’re still young at heart go ahead and give it a spin as well.
Side note: The women from the group later formed "Betty Blowtorch".
Edit: An example of the amusing nature of the songs from this album would be the lyrics from " I Left My Flannel In Seattle". If you were of the era you could probably get the level of sarcasm of such a song particularly if you were attempting to scrape out a living playing punk music.
