About the Music
If you're not a fan of mainstream releases or squeaky/high pitched lead singers (AFI, New Found Glory) or even the pop-rock genre in general (Sum 41, Blink-182, Good Charlotte), then this band isn't for you. You'd get annoyed halfway through and stop listening to it. Other than that, the band is full of catchy, fun songs with few solos (most of their stuff is rhythem).
And now onto the music...
I'd Do Anything 3:17
An excellent way to open up the album. A fast-paced, high energy single with a simple yet great opening riff and an infectiously catchy chorus. The verse riff is simple and the chorus is rhythem. A very fun song to play on the guitar or sing. Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 comes in at the 2:00 point to add even more fun to the song. The band's second single. 5/5
The Worst Day Ever 3:27
Not a bad track, but not much of a stand-out either. It opens with a simple fast riff and slows to a verse which later hits the fast chorus. It's not until the 2:00 point (the bridge) that this song kicks it into high-gear with an awesome, fast bit which suddenly stops with a Radiohead type muffled vocal then goes back into the chorus. 3/5
You Don't Mean Anything 2:28
This track seems to start off similarly to the previous track. It has a moderately fast verse with a chorus of the same speed. Like some of the other songs on the cd, the lyrics at times may appear cliche. The bridge sounds a lot like the rest of the song and isn't too fun. Joel Madden of Good Charlotte fame is on the track, but I haven't noticed his voice yet. While Mark Hoppus gets his own part to sing in the first track, Joel is covered up most of the time by Pierre. 2/5
I'm Just A Kid 3:18
Ah, the song that introduced us to the world of Simple Plan. I especiallly liked this song because of the lyrics. I was really able to relate to them because they seemed to describe most of my life from ages 7 to 13. "I'm alone and the world is having more fun than me." The song has a semi-slow verse at the beginning and later turns into a faster, funner song with high-pitched instrumentals. 4/5
When I'm With You 3:08
I still catch myself singing this song from time to time. "I wanna feel the way you make me feel when I'm with you." Not a bad song and come time for the bridge (1:20), the song hits it's high point. Not high as in Pierre screaming, but, like, the greatest part of the song. 4/5
Meet You There 4:14
A slow, emotional song that sounds like it's gonna take forever to get somewhere. And when it does it swells back down to the simple rhythematic verse consisting of slow guitar strums and drum beats. The chorus is sort of fast. But suddenly, at 3:00, the song slows into a sweet piano peice with nothing but Pierre's singing. I think that would've been a perfect place to end the song. But instead it slams back into the chorus. Lyrically, this song stands strong. As the song reaches it's closure, we get a gradguating volume swell leading us into the next song... 3/5
Addicted 3:52
Another fun song. We open up with a Guns & Roses reminiscence that appears a few times throughout the song. The band's third single has a simple verse and a chorus of rhythem. I beleive this is the first song on the whole cd in which bassist David Desrosiers gets to showcase his great vocal talents. It's not until later Simple Plan songs (like Crash and Burn) that you hear THAT much of David's vocals. But he still stands out at times throughout this cd. 4/5
My Alien 3:08
I think this is my least favorite song by the band lyrically. They're rediculous and not too catchy. But at least there's a cool palm-muted intro and a fun set of guitar riffs sprinkled throughout. 2/5
God Must Hate Me 2:44
A song that represents the feelings of pretty much every high-schooler out there. Fun kick-off and a funner verse. Unless I'm mistaken, this is the first spot on the record where you get to hear rhythem guitarist Sebastien Lefebvre's voice. He's not that bad of a singer. The second half of this song stands out more than the first. 4/5
I Won't Be There 3:09
My favorite song on the album. The lyrics seem to standout and appeal to me a lot. Even though this is a serious song, the band still seems to sound like they're having a sh!tload of fun. The guitars on this track are a lot of rhythem but turn out good. I really can't think of any downside of this song. Even if you don't relate to the lyrics, you will still have a good time listening to it. :thumb: 5/5
One Day 3:15
First track that features an acoustic guitar. Yay? Meh. I'm not a big fan of acoustic, but I'll listen to it anyways. The end of the song has simple lyrics "na na na na na na na na... one day" The lyrics before that make sense and fit with the song though. not a bad song. 2.5/5
Perfect 4:37
Here it is, guys. The most famous Simple Plan song to date. Ha. :p This song was unfortunately extremely overpaid after it was released. But I still enjoy it to this day thanks to the kick *** explosive opening. Although this is a personal song for Pierre and drummer Chuck Comeau, the lyrics appeal and relate to an endless amout of kids/teens out there. Which is of course why it's become as popular as other hits like Hoobastanks's "The Reason" and Linkin Park's "Numb" and the teeny bopper anthem "In The End". If you look past the mainstream success of this song, you will enjoy it as much as I can. You might even want to learn the tabs to play along with it. 4.5/5
If you have the enhanced edition then you'll have the following two tracks included in your package:
Grow Up 2:33
Fun, immature song about the average teenager's life. Originally recorded for the Scooby-Doo Motion Picture Soundtrack (2002).
My Christmas List 3:27
Another immature song but all done in sarcasm. Fast, funny song. Originally recorded for the Mtv TRL Christmas compilation (2002... I think).
Overall, this album is very enjoyable and I still have fun listening to it today and playing along with "Perfect" and "I'd Do Anything". 4/5 smilies.
:) :) :) :) :upset:
Happy Listening!!
