In a scene where every new band is a techmetal/grind fusion, it’s hard to find a band that is actually unique. KillWhitneyDead, the band from Arizona, decides to take a more unique twist with their techmetal/grind fusion. The two things that do make KWD unique are the fact that they use samples. Yes, it’s true that it’s a growing fad for metalcore bands to use samples… but no band uses them like KillWhitneyDead. Instead of simply putting a sample at the beginning of the songs, KWD throws samples in at the beginning, in the middle and the end, samples are everywhere. The lyrics and messages are also something that makes this band unique. Many bands in the music business do have purposes and meanings behind all of their songs, KWD’s message is a little different. The whole album, and the past two, is against women and people that just can’t be trusted. The sampling and lyrics just fit perfectly into everything. What brings KillWhitneyDead down is the fact that the music itself, if you put aside the samples and the awesome lyrics, is pretty generic. There isn’t anything special about their songs, however, it’s also true that every metalcore band around now is victim to the exact same problem.
So Pretty So Plastic is the third release from the band. This release differs with the other two greatly, the vocals are different and the guitar work isn’t as grind influenced as the past two albums. You’ll notice that, unlike the past two releases, they let samples play alongside the songs; instead of stopping the song for the sample to play.
If I Told You I Loved You Would I Get It Faster? is a KillWhitneyDead classic. Anyone that knows KWD has heard this song. There are two versions of this song floating around, one to be on the reissued version being released soon. The song (on this album) starts with Tom Cruise talking about how men are “supposedly” ***, or so women say. He then goes on to say that men “supposedly” do horrible things. After Mr. Cruise is finished talking the vocalist starts whispering until another sample states, “You’re just teasing if you didn’t know all girls cheated.” Then the song officially starts. The lyrics are amazing but the music is just your typical metalcore. The song continues, proudly stating, “All I want is your sex.” Samples are thrown in the song at various places, going along perfectly with the lyrics, making the song a classic.
This album, along with KillWhitneyDead’s other albums, is automatically a classic to me and deserves a 5/5. However, they don’t come up with anything special musically. KillWhitneyDead is a fun band and never seem to get boring. It’s awesome riding down the road with your friends shouting along with the songs on this album. Its awesome sitting with your girlfriend and “randomly” a KillWhitneyDead song comes on stating that all women suck.
