They came a long way just a couple years after this. Basically the only Birthday Party album that really qualifies as goth (while hinting at the skronk of later stuff), except they're jesters rather than dour miserablists. The cartoonishness can be irritating but it's also the record's strength: they haven't started taking themselves too seriously here.
