Review Summary: A great grindcore split, but Hatred Surge triumphs over Mammoth grinder in songwriting, and overall replay factor.
Hatred Surge delivers some of their best songs in this split with Mammoth Grinder.
HATRED SURGE SIDE:
Disconnected: This song opens with a bass groove that will ring in your head well after the song ends. This is classic Hatred Surge in it's most simplistic form. Good Song, nothing too special however (except Rahi's vocals are very impressive.) 6/10
Invega: High tempo and angry. Very good song with a great deliverance from Rahi of the line "I feel them all over me, they're eating me alive" The way he phrases this line makes it very catchy. This all leads to a brutal blast-beat backed riff that continues to break down and down until it is almost unbearably slow. Great song 8.5/10
Mood Stabilizer: My favorite on the album. Very good ideas strung throughout this song. The trading vocals sound superb and the hypnotic riff makes you want to get violent. Also when it gets the breakdown where Rahi growls "This is something, I can't control...." you will be ready to cut loose. 10/10
Supernova: This behemoth is and extremely heavy Hatred Surge sludge fest. Very Classic of them, better then Disconnected in my opinion, but still quite typical. 6.5/10
MAMMOTH GRINDER SIDE:
Pulverizer: Pulverizer is a super-groovy machine that pummels the entire way through. In fact, there is 2+ minutes until any vocals come in. Very heavy and very catchy. 7/10
Societal Collapse: Great heavy grind song. Very solid. The playing around on the toms in the beginning is very good on the drummers part, it keeps the song moving in a very good way. It then goes on to a thrashy riff and almost sounds, dare I say, very "Death" (The Band) inspired. Once again very good. 7/10
Surveilled: Finally my least favorite on the record. I don't know why but this song just doesn't do it for me. The opening riff sounds somewhat cheesy to me for a Mammoth Grinder song. It sort of just goes along and gets kind of boring by the middle/end. 5.5/10
I obviously enjoyed the Hatred Surge side more, but this is a very solid split from two very good Powerviolence/Grindcore bands. Recommended for anyone who is a fan off either of the band or neither at all. This is a great album to start on if you have never heard anything from either band.
