Kid Koala, né Eric San, is an incredibly creative turntablist who calls Montréal, Québec his hometown. By blending the skills of hip hop turntablism with jazz, blues, sound effects records and spoken word, and almost any other genre out there, Kid Koala creates some of the most musically diverse, and creatively intriguing albums heard in the genre of turntablism. After releasing a mixtape entitled "Scratchcratchratchatch" in 1997 he eventually landed himself on UK imprint Ninja Tune. Several appearances on compilations ensued and his first full-length album "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" was released in 2000. 2003 saw the release of a second full-length called: "Some of My Best Friends Are DJ's". Kid did a tour with P-Love and Jester in 2005, and the result of that tour was a live album by the name of "Live From the Short Atention Span Theatre." In a throwback to his original mixtape that got him where he is today, the ever-creative DJ and turntable master released a two-track "mixtape" style album entitled "Your Mom's Favorite DJ" in 2007. THE best Canadian to ever step behind a set of turntables (sometimes spinning on as many as 4 decks simultaneously WITHOUT using headphones) this maverick of vinyl continues to expand his eclectic, genre-bending trait with the inclusion of media such as live graffiti to music, several graphic books (illustrated by the Kid himself) as well as doing all his own album artwork, this guy is just friggin amazing. If you ever get a chance to see this guy live, you'll pay no more than $20, and it will blow your mind. Seriously. Kid Koala also played turntables for a funk-rock-soul band called Bullfrog. Also good music to get down with your lady friend, if you have one. Play their album. Pants will be removed. « hide |
