Mantas was a short-lived American Metal band from Orlando, Florida. Formed in 1983 by guitarist/songwriter Chuck Schuldiner, the band released a number of demos in the style of Speed/Thrash Metal, yet played aggressively enough to be credited with pioneering Death Metal. In late 1984, the band renamed to Death. Chuck Schuldiner continued to be the main creative force behind Death through a number of demos and seven studio albums until its dissolution. Drummer/vocalist Kam Lee and guitarist Rick Rozz only remained with Death until 1989 (after the release of sophomore record Leprosy), at which point they focused their efforts on their own seminal Death Metal band, Massacre (which they had formed in 1985).
