Comprising of singer/synthist Eleanor Jackson and co-writer/co-producer Ben Langmaid, the duo, known as La Roux, which translates as "The Red" came forth during the middle 2009 with their self titled debut. Upon a fist inspection, it would seem that their impressionism and flamboyant stylishness would naturally embark from the French countryside, but in fact Britain is where these two call home. The duo -- who often resemble more of a solo act via Jackson's curvaceous hair style and predominant on stage appearance, fuse the similar styles of synthpop and its electro cousin. It's clear that David Bowie is a prime influence for both Jackson's image and occasional derivativeness. She reminds us that the relationship between herself and Langmaid is "very much a half and half sharing situation... not like a singer producer outfit". With that in mind their debut was, and still is, one of the year's better success stories, and will certainly provide any follow-up with something to anchor from. Pressing will be how long can such an artist/producer relationship last, given that they often spiral inwards and not outwards over time. « hide |
