One of the most influential and iconic groups of the 1960s, The Jimi Hendrix Experience were renowned for their loud and abrasive style of rock music. Combining the aggressive guitar playing of Jimi Hendrix, Noel Redding's emphatic bass grooves, and Mitch Mitchell's bombastic drumming, the group took rock music to unprecedented heights and are widely recognized as one of the major catalysts in hard rock's evolution into heavy metal. The Jimi Hendrix Experience were also esteemed for their innovative tendencies both in the studio and onstage. Being one of the primary advocates in the growing popularity of psychedelic music during the late 1960s, the group often engaged in lengthy impromptu performances that showed off their virtuosity and eccentric array of electrical effects that would later help pave the way for future progressive rock artists. The group originally formed in England on October 1966, when auditions were being launched to find Jimi Hendrix backing musicians. Though Noel Redding was eventually chosen as the bassist, he had never actually played the instrument before auditioning, as he was initially a guitarist. Nevertheless, Hendrix felt Noel Redding had the look and attitude that was right for the band and decided to hire him. Mitch Mitchell, on the other hand, was a seasoned London drummer who brought jazz chops and a lead style of playing to the table. He would prove to be Hendrix’s most valuable musical partner. Though initially conceived as Hendrix’s backing band, The Jimi Hendrix Experience soon became something much more abstract than that. Along with Cream, they were the first group to popularize the “power trio” format, which essentially strips the line-up down to the essentials: bass, guitar, and drums. This smaller format also encourages more extroverted playing from the players involved, often at very high volumes, with Jimi Hendrix fusing his lead and rhythm guitar duties into one, while also making use of then-revolutionary guitar effects such as feedback and wah-wah. Mitch Mitchell played hard-hitting jazz-influenced grooves that often served a melodic role as much as they did timekeeping. Redding was the eye of the storm, playing deceptively simple bass lines that helped to anchor the band’s sound. Though the group were only together for a total of 4 years, their 3 studio albums; Are You Experienced (1967), Axis: Bold as Love (1967), and Electric Ladyland (1968), have over the years been considered pinnacle works in rock music and are celebrated as classics in modern music. In 1992, The Jimi Hendrix Experience were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. « hide
