Combining shoegaze and traditional british rock of the 60s The Verve rose to become one the most significant bands of the modern era. OriginallycalledVerve , the band was formed by singer Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury in Wigan, Great Britain in 1989. They released their first single "All in the Mind" prior to a self titled EP in 1992. Their trippy and atmospheric full length debut"A Storm in Heaven" was released in 1993. The band became big stars upon the strength of singles like "Bittersweet Symphony" and "The Drugs Don't Work". McCabe left the band while touring in 1998 and the band split for good in 1999.
