Ethel Cain is the current moniker/alter ego and audiovisual project of Floridian singer/songwriter Hayden Anhedönia (born 1998), who previously worked under the name White Silas. Referred to by Anhedönia as her “evil twin,” Ethel Cain is a character through which Anhedönia processes aspects of her experiences as a trans woman raised in a Southern Baptist household and, more broadly, the conflicts and contradictions inherent to Americana. Among many demos, her early releases included several EPs through which she refined her dream pop, slowcore, and ethereal wave inspired sound before releasing her debut LP Preacher’s Daughter in May 2022. The album is alleged to be part of a planned trilogy, with accompanying films and novels possibly coming farther down the line.
