Minutemen was a band formed during the first wave of hardcore punk in the late 70s/early 80s. D. Boon was the frontman as well as the guitarist, Mike Watt played bass, and George Hurley was the drummer. A common misconception is that their name derives from their tendency to play extremely short songs, but Watt claims it was a parody on right-wing giants and that they would be "minute" as in small. Boon was the frontman as well as the guitarist, Mike Watt played bass, and George Hurley was the drummer. A common misconception is that their name derives from their tendency to play extremely short songs, but Watt claims it was a parody on right-wing giants and that they would be "minute" as in small. Although they were concise, they were rarely simple. Boon's guitar solos were complemented by Watt's melodic and dextrous basslines, while Hurley laid down the beats. The band expanded from straight-up punk over the course of its discography, adding influences from funk and that earliest form of protest music: American folk. Sadly, D. Boon was killed in a car accident in 1985 and the Minutemen were disbanded. Watt and Hurley reformed with fIREHOSE, which is a great band in its own right. But it will never be quite the same without D. Boon. « hide |
