One of the leading bands in the post-2000 garage rock revival, The White Stripes was an alternative rock band, primarily comprised by Jack
White (singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist) and Meg White (drummer). Although their typical song is simplistic with Meg White's drumming

The band formed in 1997 after Jack and Meg's marriage (the duo often portrayed themselves as being siblings) and after Meg had taken up the
drums. With their third album, "White Blood Cells", the duo were launched into the limelight, with the track "Fell in Love with a Girl" single (and
its Lego-animation music video directed by Michel Gondry) showcasing their sound. "Elephant" (2003)further elevated the band's position, being
released to positive acclaim and reaching the top of the UK album charts.
2005's "Get Behind Me Satan" saw the band attempting to move away from their typical sound, with instruments such as the marimba being
used for the first time. Critical and commercial response was mixed, and this year saw the band court further controversy when Jack White
agreed to write a song for a Coca-Cola commercial. Their latest album, Icky Thump, was released in June 2007.
On February 2, 2011, the rock duo publicly announced their disbandment. They specifically denied any artistic differences or health issues, but
cited "a myriad of reasons ... mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band". « hide |
