Robyn Rihanna Fenty (born February 20, 1988), known
solely by her middle name Rihanna is a Barbadian singer-
songwriter and occasional model. She rose to fame with
the release of her debut album Music of the Sun in
2005 which contained the Worldwide dance-hall smash
“Pon De Replay”.
In 2006, she released sophomore album A Girl Like
Me which spawned hit singles “S.O.S.(Rescue Me)”
and “Unfaithful”. This album saw her move slowly away
from her dance hall roots in a more commercial R&B
direction.
2007 saw Rihanna become a megastar with the record
breaking hit “Umbrella”, the first singlefrom her hugely
successful Good Girl Gone Bad. That album and its
2008 re-issue Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded went
on to release a further seven successful singles including
“Disturbia”, “Don't Stop the Music”, “Shut Up and Drive”
and Breakin' Dishes”. The album saw her move in a more
poppy direction but still retained some of the R&B and
dance-hall sounds from her earlier albums.
In February 2009, Rihanna's personal life made headlines
when she was beaten up by her then boyfriend and fellow
singer Chris Brown. Later that year Rihanna
reinvented herself with her fourth album Rated R
which proved to be a vastly different piece sonically. The
release saw her take on a more edgy look and sound,
being more noticeably darker than her previous works,
perhaps a reaction to her personal life. Further the
album contains large elements of hip-hop, dubstep and
rock and saw Rihanna co-write a large amount of the
album's material.
Late 2010 saw the release of Loud, a more rounded,
sexier album that appeared to have close ties to earlier
sounds as well as defining songs such as the
provocative "S&M" and dance anthem "Only Girl (In the
World)".
Rihanna has participated in successful collaborations
with Ne-Yo, Jay-Z, Kanye West, T.I. and Maroon-5. She is
known as one of Barbados' most successful singers and
acts as a cultural ambassador for her home country.
Rihanna shares similar music style with fellow Caribbean
singers Shontelle, Sean Kingston and Livvi Franc while
also sharing similarities with American R&B singers such
as Beyoncé and Ciara. « hide |
