Static-X's roots trace to the Midwest, where vocalist/guitarist Wayne Static grew up in Michigan and drummer Ken Jay in Illinois. They ended up in Chicago separately, but were introduced at the record store where Jay worked by Smashing Pumpkins vocalist Billy Corgan. Static and Jay decided to head west to California and start up a new band, called Drill. Static and Jay decided to head west to California and start up a new band, called Drill. Shortly after their arrival, Osaka-native Koichi Fukada responded to the duo's ad and became their new guitarist, as well as programmer. Bassist Tony Campos, the only true Californian, was the final piece of the puzzle, and the band was renamed Static, though due to other bands being called that name and one particular band using the name asking for money, the renamed themselves Static-X. Static X's music around this period combined aggressive metal and thrash with industrial overtones and techno pulse/dance music.After shopping a demo around, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records in February 1998. They then released their debut album Wisconsin Death Trip a year later, which on the back of crossover singles (mainly "Push It") the album was eventually certified platinum.Despite the album's success, Fukada left the band, and the band, acting as a three-piece, recorded the follow-up Machine (2001), a more aggressive album with less dance influences, which was eventually certified gold despite having less successful singles. It was also around the album's release when ex-Dope guitarist Tripp Eisen joined the band and helped tour the record. Ken Jay would leave following the tour.The band followed up Machine with Shadow Zone in 2003, an album which had a higher focus on melody than in previous releases. It was the first album to feature live drumming (as opposed to sampled drum hits run through a drum machine), done by A Perfect Circle drummer Josh Freese in-studio, though Nick Oshiro replaced him live, and became a full-time member during the album's supporting tour.In 2004, a rejuvenated Static-X returned to recording a new album, Start A War (2005) , an album returning to the band's aggressive roots. unfortunately, during the recording process, Tripp was arrested for having sex with minors, and therefore was promptly fired. Fukada then on became a full time member again on the guitar, having originally come back to help with programming. After moving to Reprise Records, the group released Cannibal in 2007, which was the first album to contain guitar solos (though "Pieces" from the last album had a solo), with them being featured in 11 out of its 12 songs, and was significantly faster and more intense than previous released. Part of its supporting tour was recorded for the band's first live video/album, "Cannibal Killers Live", released in 2008.Following the release of Cult Of Static in 2009, a more experimental album with longer songs and less industrial effects, Static-X broke up due to internal tensions. Wayne revived Static-X in 2011 without any of his former band members in order to tour his solo album, Pighammer, but legal disputes over name rights forced the band to shut down again.In 2014, three days shy of his 49th birthday, Wayne Static died of a toxic prescription drug/alcohol combination. His wife died by suicide two years later.RIP Wayne Static, 1965-2014. RIP Tera Wray, 1982-2016. Dearly missed.In 2018, the near-complete Wisconsin Death Trip line-up of Ken, Tony and Koichi returned, initially planning to tour in his memory; however things took a diffrent turn when Campos found isolated vocals of Wayne when looking for backing tracks for touring. As the band kept finding more and more vocals, the band decided to record a new studio album; Project Regeneration. While the record was initially going to also feature guest vocalists, the band found so many vocal tracks they had enough for two whole studio records! The band also toured with an anonymous vocalist, only known as "Xer0" (widely believed to be Edsel Dope).The first of the two, Project Regeneration Vol. 1, was released on July 10, 2020- 11 years, 3 months and 23 days since the band's last studio album.
