Mark Kozelek (born 1967 in Massillion, Ohio) is an American singer/songwriter and frontman of Sun Kil Moon and Red HousePainters.
Originally a lynchpin of the sadcore movement in alternative rock with Red House Painters, Kozelek’s harrowingautobiographical lyrics gave unflinchingly detailed accounts of pain, despair and loss while the lengthy accompanying music wasslow, intense, dissonant and bleak. As time has passed, his music has become more acoustic and folk-inflected, while his lyricsnow seem obsessed with memory, geography and those who died before their natural time, arguably best demonstrated on SunKil Moon’s Ghosts of the Great Highway.
