Big Black was formed in Chicago in 1982 by the music journalist Steve Albini, who would later go on to form Rapeman and Shellac, as well as performing tasks as a 'recording engineer' for many different bands. The band began with just Albini and his faithful drum machine, Roland, recording in his room on a borrowed 4-track over spring break. The six songs recorded were called the Lungs EP. He then recruited Jeff Pezzati and Santiago Durango of Naked Raygun fame to join him and Roland. Big Black became renowned for their raw guitar sound and scathing lyrics.
