Bloomfield, Kooper and Stills was a supergroup that only made one album in a considerably short run, it was 1968's Super Session. It was an album conceived by Al Kooper, which featured the work of guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. Bloomfield and Stills didn't actually play together during Super Session's recording: Side 1 contained tracks played by Bloomfield, while Stills played on tracks from Side 2.

Bloomfield and Stills didn't actually play together during Super Session's recording: Side 1 contained tracks played by Bloomfield, while Stills played on tracks from Side 2.
Kooper and Bloomfield had previously worked together on recording session for Bob Dylan's classic album Highway 61 Revisited. Kooper had recently left his band Blood, Sweat & Tears, and he was working as an A&R man for Columbia Records, while Bloomfield was about to part ways with blues rock group Electric Flag. Kooper contacted Bloomfield, asking if he wanted to book some studio time and jam.
Kooper booked two days of studio time in May 1968, having recruited some session musicians, such as keyboardist Barry Goldberg and bassist Harvey Brooks, who had previously recorded for Electric Flag, and drummer Eddie Hoh. That quintet recorded a number of blues-oriented instrumental songs on that first day of studio time. However, Bloomfield didn't show up for a second day of recording, so Kooper quickly reached out to Stephen Stills, who was about to leave his band Buffalo Springfield.
As Stills stepped in for Bloomfield, Kooper's session musicians recorded vocal tracks for some of Super Session's songs, including Bob Dylan's cover of It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry and Donovan's cover of Season Of The Witch (Donovan's version featured Eddie Hoh on drums and Jimmy Page on guitar). Stills added his guitar tracks to Super Session's mixing and recording was completed.
Just recorded in two days, Super Session became a success in sales, attaining Gold status. Plus, that collaboration between Bloomfield, Kooper and Stills opened a door for the "supergroup" concept of the late 1960's and 1970's. « hide |
