Thomas Dybdahl

Norwegian press have said of Dybdahl, “His delicate but lush music recalls that of Tim Buckley, Nick Drake and other forward-thinking songwriters.” with The New York Times adding “Thomas Dybdahl writes songs that move in for extreme close-ups: his acoustic guitar, his breathy voice, his vows of love…the tempos are glacial and the instruments few and pristine, so that every gesture is exposed. Anything less than total grace would turn precious and cloying, but Mr. Dybdahl maintains his poise; each song has the delicate suspense of a drawn breath.”A collation of his previous 4 albums, ...read more

Dybdahl maintains his poise; each song has the delicate suspense of a drawn breath.”A collation of his previous 4 albums, the self titled ‘Thomas Dybdahl’ is a perfect introduction to his musical musings and will be released September 14th, preceded by a 4 track EP including the stunning ‘B A Part' on Jul 13th (Last Suppa/PIAS) and an exclusive 7” of From Grace. His debut album ‘…that great October sound’ was released in Norway in October 2002. The album includes 11 songs and was written, produced, played and recorded by Thomas. Most of the tracks were conceived in New York, autumn 2001 where he collaborated with Mike Daly (Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams), Edie Kuhnle (Cat & Edie) and PK (Boots) Ottestad (Getaway People, Robbie Williams). The result is a melancholic stroke of genius, which is introspective without succumbing to platitudes and naïveté. The album won a Norwegian Grammy, an Alternative Grammy and was also awarded an Edvardprisen for ‘Best Pop Song’. The second album, “Stray Dogs”, was released October 2003. Once again the reviews were overwhelming, the tours sold out and the album and singles sales were impressive. He was nominated for two prizes at the Norwegian Grammy Awards .His third album, ‘One Day You’ll dance For Me, New York City’, completed his planned ‘October Trilogy’ and was released in October 2004. The album went straight to # 1 in the Norwegian album charts and quickly went Platinum. In 2006 Thomas Dybdahl released his fourth album, “Science” which won him his second Norwegian Grammy. The album artwork boasts some notable names with designer (and vocal Dybdahl supporter) Philippe Starck providing the graphic art direction and famed lens-man Jean-Baptiste Mondino (Madonna, David Bowie, Björk) providing the photographic art.All albums were mastered by Scott Hull (Miles Davies, Uncle Tupelo, Bruce Springsteen, etc) in Classic Sound Studio, New York. Thomas Dybdahl is currently recording his fifth studio album due for release in 2010. He has also written and recorded the score music for the Norwegian film ‘Rottenetter’ (‘Rat nights’) due August 2009, directed by Arild Ommundsen (‘Mongoland’, Sundance nominated ‘Monster Thursday’).http://www.thomasdybdahl.com/#/english/bio « hide
